Hello from the Wonky chair design studio.
First of all, we would like to introduce ourselves. We are an all Welsh Furniture Design Studio based in Cardiff and no, we don’t make wonky chairs.
The Wonky Chair Design Studio is built up of three Product and Furniture Designers; Tom Smee, Josh Maskell and myself, Nick Jones. All three of us graduated from the Product Design course at Cardiff School of Art and Design. It was on that course that our vision to set up a sustainably lead design studio was born.
We applied for a start-up business scheme called Inc. Space, which is situated within Cardiff School of Art and Design. It’s an incubation scheme that removes all the larger risks of setting up a business and allows a space for exciting and creative businesses to flourish.
The Wonky Chair Design Studio focuses on what we consider the greater matter surrounding design and manufacture: sustainability.
In the UK, up to 4.3 million tonnes of timber waste is generated annually. We want to be better than that. As a Design Studio our primary ambition is to drive the notion of sustainability through accelerating the progression of upcycling. We try to challenge the existing ideologies of upcycling.
The current state of upcycling has seemed to have attracted a cult following or should we say imitating of the Shabby Chic interior design style, which essentially involves painting once beautiful, old French wing back Chairs with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.
Although its sustainable credibility is debatable, passing off old furniture as if it’s new does mean a small percentage of people aren’t buying new furniture. Therefore not contributing towards the escalating pile of waste. But surely it’s just a fad? And if it’s not, it’s definitely not what we would consider true upcycling, ‘Reviving’ suits it better. Is this really as far as upcycling can stretch?
We think not. We believe that a new direction is in order. We ideate/design/create brand new (thankfully usually paint free) furniture that is made out of found and reclaimed materials. Materials that somebody else has deemed to have little or no more value. Yes, we sometimes use new materials where needed, but this is to create a harmonious contrast between the old and the new.
All the timber we use is either sourced by us, sourced from a credible reclaim timber yard or donated.
The Wonky chair design studio offers a variety of different services for all furniture and design related projects, but like we say, with a heavy focus on sustainability.
